Frostbite 2009 - by Megan Pascoe
Marstrand in Sweden known for its match rancing heritige holds the Frostbite event each year for CB 66 (Swedish SB3), C55 (2 person keelboat, symetric kite) and the 2.4. This year Frostbite was raising money for the Queen Silvia's children hospital which is a very good cause as they are reliant on donations to keep improving their facilities. Ten 2.4's attend this year from 4 countries. Luckly for the first weekend in December it was only 6 degrees and only 12 knots. Marstrand is a bit like Frensham with the wind shifting a lot. The utube video on www.regatta.nu of the CB 66 shows how close the racing is. Although it was quite scary when the 2.4's were coming one way through the start line and the CB66 were coming the other way. I attended Frostbite last year and had so much fun that I went back this year. I borrowed a boat off Arne K Larrson who runs Regatta.nu and caught a Ryan Air flight. The racing was very tight with Jonas Palm leading over night and managing to stay in front at the end of Sunday. Jens Als Anderson came second and Peter Anderson was third. I ended up fourth and had a great weekend. This was the 20th anniversary of Frostbite and will be under new management hopfully next year so the fun can continue. Its the best weekend break money can buy.

Fort Myers 2009
Fort Myers is a river venue in Florida with some tide but lots of shifts. It was not quite as bad as Frensham but at times it was defiantly similar (Although it was a bit warmer in America). This made consistency the aim of the game which Paralympic Bronze medallist John Ruff and newly crowned 2009 World Champion succeeded.
The sailing started with the US Nationals. Three days of light winds made for some very interesting racing. One minute you could be up and the next you could be down. It was all decided on whether you could hold your nerve because your brain was telling you it would come back but there was that nagging thought that it wouldn’t. The light winds brought another problem especially for those of us that live further North. 40 degrees heat and 90 % humidity meant when the wind totally died it was hot, but the race committee provided ice cream made it a lot better. The winner was IFDS World Champion Thiery Schmitter from Holland, with the two grand masters from Sweden Peter Norlin and Hans Asklund in third and second respectively. Megan Pascoe from Britain managed fourth with fellow Britain Helena Lucas in fourteenth.
The next couple of days say one massive Halloween party and the international AGM. With that came a few hangovers and a new President, Secretary and Director. Measurement was also done in these few days. Sails’ were checked as was the weight of the boats. The boats without a floatation certificate were checked to see if they floated. Measurements J and E were also checked.
When the worlds started the winds being light but then we were rewarded with a cool front and a Northerly gradient which made sailing much more pleasant. The organising committee of the Edison sailing centre did a great job on and off the water with food every night which ranged from pizza to crab and alligator. They also decided to bring lunch on the water for two of the days. This included bringing half a pontoon on the water with a barbeque on top. The results finished with two American’s on top, John Ruff and Carl Horricks with Paul Tingley from Canada in Third. The top three disabled were John Ruff, Paul Tingley and Thiery Schmitter. The top three grand masters (over 65) were once again all Swedish with Hans Asklund winning followed by Per Arbholm and Peter Norlin. The masters (55 – 65) was won by the Canadian Allan Leibel followed by two Fins Rikard Bjurstrom and Bobi Casen. One trophy that the Brits dominate is the female trophy with Megan Pascoe winning it followed by Helena Lucas and in third was the American Caroline Wilson.
If you are wondering whether to attend a worlds take a look at the pictures on http://www.24mrworlds09.edisonsailingcenter.org/gallery.php. It was one great event with a great group of people and it will only be better next year with twice the number of boats.
Open Worlds Hoorn 19/25 Sepetember 2010
This will be the closest Open Worlds to the UK since 1994. It is the perfect opportunity to have a great holiday and race against the best 2.4 sailors from all over the world. Located on the IJsselmeer Hoorn is a beautiful Dutch town which is around 4 hours from Calais and under 2 hours from Hook Van Holland. There should be around 80 boats and talking to the organiser it sounds like the social and racing will be very enjoyable. If you are wondering if the Worlds is for you then consider a few things. Firstly it is a very beautiful town. Secondly there is a range of abilities that attend the worlds each year so where ever you are in the fleet there is always a battle to be had. Finally the international fleet are very welcoming and accommodating and are always looking to help. Looking back to Kolding 2007 and to Gran Canaria 2008 having a good British attendance provides more fun for all. Check out http://www.24worlds2010.nl/ for more information or email myself at
